My April album of the month is FUNERAL LEECH ‘The Illusion of Time’ whose mid-tempo double kick death doom hits in all the right places. And when thos synths drop on top of their already grueling sound, prepare for an out-of-body experience. Allow me to demonstrate!
I am listening to the new COMPRESS ep ‘The Final Level of Consciousness’ (out Mar 15). The hostile riffs, manic drums, subtle synths, and THESE VOCALS combine for my exact kind of blazin’ USBM.
I am moving to the new RHÛN album ‘Conveyance in Death’ (Jan 26) whose USBM brings that special sauce and many layers waiting to be peeled. This captivating release is my “first album of 2024” and its burn is BRIGHT.
Welcome to the Butthole Album Art Awards! (BHAAAs)
Hello friends, and welcome to the 7th Annual BHAAAs! There were no fewer candidates than in previous years, but I’ve pared 2023 down to the following 20 holes.
I am currently moving to the new CARNAL TOMB (Nov 3) whose death metal is as filthy as it is adventurous, with riffs galore interspersed with doom-laden passages. The real star is the mix, as every bass attack can be heard and felt, and things get especially juicy on “Cerebral Ingestion” with that disco hi-hat and irresistible groove.
I am currently moving to the PYRKAGION release from August. Fiery, encompassing USBM I cannot get enough of, and if you don’t think I’ll put a two track, 25min EP on my year-end list…
I am currently moving to the new EXCARNATED ENTITY ‘Mass Grave Horizon’ (Sept 8) whose miserable death doom packs 43mins of thunderous riffs with a melodic nod to the classics. Complete package that will rank high on my year end list.
